Swingers
The ultimate cool/un-cool comedy sees Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn bullshit their way around the local lounge scene in LA, picking up tips and tricks to lure the local female gliterrati into their relatively empty lives. Like the best comedies, Swingers takes the lead character’s vaguely pathetic sides, and is all the funnier for it. Observant friends of the stag can take out a whole load of tips that’ll make the trip fruitful, whilst everyone else can just revel in the excuse to start referring to everyone and everything as “totally money”.
National Lampoon’s Animal House
The original gross out classic, this iconic party favorite is best known for the image of dearly departed John Belushi in an unflattering toga, the sort of stag do get up that’s just not seen enough nowadays. Animal House is a flattering, inspirational movie for the average man, as it doesn’t concern cool leader of the gang sorts – it’s about idiots getting pissed and having fun – something we can all relate to.
The Goonies
Few films inspire as much nostalgia as The Goonies. Released at the tail end of the eighties, it’s a key part of the childhood of anyone in their late twenties or early thirties. And what it lacks in breasts and car crashes, it makes up for in caves, pirates and swearing children. The Hangover
The most popular comedy of last year put stag dos firmly back into the pop cultural consensus, when a Las Vegas trip goes terribly wrong as four blokes adopt a baby, steal a tiger from Mike Tyson and annoy some gangsters and are too drunk to figure out how it all happened. Whilst the film is undoubtedly very funny, the downside is that all the amazing shots of Vegas will make you feel very envious if you’re off to Bridlington for the weekend. This comedy starring Christian Slater has gathered a cult following over the years. As stag dos go, Very Bad Things fulfils the promise of it’s title. It’s very, very dark – I didn’t think I’d be recommending a film that begins with somebody accidentally killing a prostitute in a bathroom – but it’s also pretty funny, and in an odd way, it’s quite believable. As five mates have to bury a woman in the desert and get it all horribly wrong, try and look each other in the eyes as the end credits roll and imagine yourselves doing anything else differently…
