Few stag activities achieve the task of recreating adolescent male fantasies as well as paintball. The small boys we once were dreamed of being grown men, out in the wild, confronting our enemies and facing all the perils of nature, surviving on nothing but our wits and a very large gun.
Paintball History
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the game was invented in America. The first official game was held in 1981 after the discovery of an air gun that fired balls of paint, invented in the ’60s for the forestry industry to mark difficult to reach trees. This discovery finally allowed two men to fulfil their dreams of living the events of 'The Most Dangerous Game' without facing a lengthy spell in the pokey.
So how does it work?
Well, essentially, two teams of men get camouflaged up to the nines before descending into a densely wooded area, and the darkest recesses of their hearts. What ensues is a contest of survival and sniping, an elimination game where each team attempts to best the enemy by leaving a single, clear paint mark anywhere upon their body or equipment.
Once hit, each player must leave the battlefield until one team is victorious. Variations on the simple elimination game, such as ‘capture the flag’, have arisen to provide experienced players with more of a challenge, but the elimination format has remained the core of the game.
Some paintball centres offer all day activities and mix the types of shooting games up with exciting missions and flag capture scenarios. This activity will get you fully pumped up for the stag evenings entertainment.
